about
April is sexual assault awareness month. “Who You Are” is about dealing with past abuse and identifying your abuser. For some going through the steps of healing from a sexual assault, that’s a lifelong process. I hope that this song may evoke the sense that whatever the journey may look like, identifying your abuser is possible. Reaching out to people who care about you is an option. Healing is possible.
If anyone you know opens up about a past instance of abuse/sexual assault it’s important to consider the way we react can have a huge effect in their healing. www.rainn.org is a solid resource for anyone who has either been a victim of sexual assault/abuse or for those wanting tools of how to support and help anyone who may come to you as a victim of abuse and assault.
lyrics
Seventeen, running down the darkest halls
Thought you’d be a comfort
Could it be, History is yelling out
Telling me to tear it down, the lie you built around me
Who you are, isn’t who you are
Who you are, isn’t who you are
I see who you are
I see who you are
Your name doesn’t keep me up anymore so I’m talking now
And the fears that I held in the shadows - I’m throwing out
I thought now I know that the guilt you left it was not for me
It was not for me
It was not for me
It’s not who I am
You’re not who I am
We see who you are
